Ready To Move? Tips For A Successful Move

moving company tips

Moving is a complicated process. Keeping up with belongings, family members, movers and a number of other tasks can be a daunting proposition. That means the more organized you are, the less stressful the move will be.

Firstly, even before talking with a mover, decide in advance which goods will be shipped and which will be sold or given away. Then consider whether or not you would like the mover to pack and what other type of additional services you may want.

Remember that packing is always a separate bid from moving. An estimator may come to your home and create a bid, or make an estimate by talking to you over the phone. Moves that are less than 50 miles away are usually priced by the hour. For longer distance moves, estimates are based on weight, usually per 100 pounds.

How To Choose A Reputable Moving Company

Here is an essential “to do” list to assist you with finding the right moving company:

1. Get several written estimates from different movers. The quoted dollar amount should be based on an actual inspection of your goods.

2. Make sure the mover has insurance coverage and holds a license issued by the appropriate authority. For moving from one state to another, the FMCSA(Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) issues a U.S. DOT number. You can check if a mover is licensed to operate at www.protectyourmove.gov. For moves within a State, requirements vary. Find out if the company is authorized to operate in your state at your local consumer affairs state, county or local or State Attorney General.

3. When choosing a moving company you should know what their priorities are. If you hire a mover based solely on the cheapest price, you may be sacrificing other aspects that are really important, such as if the move is delivered on time. Also, keep in mind that movers are required by law to deliver your goods at a cost not to exceed 10 percent of the price of the estimate. This clause is known as the 110 percent rule.

4. Do your homework. Read the booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move“.  The moving company you choose is bound to give this document created by the federal government when you move from one state to another. The booklet also contains the information you need in the event that the mover loses or damages your goods.

5. Finally, check the history of complaints against the moving company and consult with organizations working on behalf of consumers, such as Better Business Bureau.
